Glycolic Acid for Skin: Serum, Toner or Face Wash?

Glycolic acid is the fastest way to brighter, smoother skin, and the easiest to overdo. Here's how to choose the right format and use it safely.

Glycolic acid is the most popular alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) in skincare. It has the smallest molecules of the AHAs, so it works quickly, which is great for dull skin (bejaan jild) and uneven texture, and also why it's easy to overdo.

What does glycolic acid do?

Glycolic acid loosens the "glue" that holds dead skin cells on the surface. As they shed:

  • Skin looks brighter and more even.
  • Texture gets smoother, and makeup sits better.
  • Dark spots and tanning fade faster, because pigmented surface cells are shed sooner.
  • Other products absorb better.

With long-term use, it can also soften fine lines a little.

Serum, toner or face wash: which should you choose?

  • Face wash (2–5%): rinsed off after a minute. The gentlest way to start and hard to overdo.
  • Toner (5–7%): a leave-on liquid, swiped on with cotton. Noticeably stronger.
  • Serum (8–10%+): the strongest leave-on option, best for experienced users with resilient skin.

L'Oréal Revitalift 10% Pure Glycolic Acid Serum (30ml)Glycolic acid 10%VariesNormal, oily, experienced usersStrongest; not for beginners

Elluvi Brightening Face Wash (Rs 849) is where we'd tell most people to start. The 3% glycolic acid gives a gentle daily brightening effect, and the 3% niacinamide helps control oil and calm redness. If you want more after a month or two, add a leave-on toner such as The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% two or three nights a week.

How do you use a leave-on glycolic acid?

  1. At night only, on clean, dry skin.
  2. Swipe or press it on, avoiding the eyes and lips.
  3. Wait a few minutes, then apply moisturiser.
  4. Start two nights a week, and build up slowly if your skin is comfortable.
  5. Wear SPF 50 sunblock every morning. AHAs make skin more sun-sensitive.

Mild tingling for a few seconds is normal. Burning, redness that lasts, or peeling means you're overdoing it.

Who should avoid glycolic acid?

  • Very sensitive skin, eczema or rosacea: try mandelic or lactic acid, which are gentler.
  • Active, inflamed acne: salicylic acid is a better choice. See our salicylic acid face wash guide.
  • Skin already irritated by retinol or a harsh cream: let it calm down first.

What shouldn't you mix it with?

On the same night, avoid combining a leave-on glycolic acid with retinol, other strong acids, or benzoyl peroxide until you know how your skin reacts. Niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and centella are fine partners.

For dark spots, glycolic acid works best alongside a pigment fighter like alpha arbutin or niacinamide, and daily sunblock.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use glycolic acid every day?

A glycolic face wash, usually yes. A leave-on glycolic serum or toner, start two or three nights a week. Using a strong acid every day often leads to irritation, which can darken brown skin.

Can I use glycolic acid with retinol?

Not on the same night when you're starting out. Alternate nights, for example glycolic acid on Monday and Thursday and retinol on other nights, and stop if your skin stings or peels.

Can I use glycolic acid with niacinamide?

Yes. Niacinamide is gentle and pairs well with glycolic acid; many products, like Elluvi Brightening Face Wash, already combine them.

Is glycolic acid safe for brown skin?

Yes, at sensible strengths and with sunblock. The risk on brown skin is irritation leading to dark patches, so start low and go slow.

Glycolic acid ke kya fayde hain?

Glycolic acid removes dead skin, so dull skin (bejaan jild) looks brighter, texture gets smoother and dark spots fade faster. Start with a glycolic face wash and always wear sunblock.
