Alpha arbutin is one of the most searched brightening ingredients in Pakistan, and one of the few that's both effective and gentle. It's a good first step for dark spots (daag dhabbe), tanning and mild melasma if you want to avoid stronger, riskier products.

What does alpha arbutin do?

Alpha arbutin comes from the same family as hydroquinone but releases its effect slowly, which makes it much gentler. It slows tyrosinase, the enzyme your skin uses to make melanin. Less new pigment means dark spots gradually fade and new ones are less likely to form.

It helps with:

  • Dark spots from sun or old acne.
  • Tanning and uneven tone.
  • Melasma, especially combined with other ingredients and strict sunblock.

It won't change your natural skin colour, and it can't fade pigment if you're not protecting your skin from the sun.

Elluvi Hydra Glow Cream (50ml)Alpha arbutin 2%, niacinamide 5%, retinol 0.3%Rs 1,449Normal, dry, combinationBest value; arbutin plus two pigment fighters
The Ordinary Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA (30ml)Alpha arbutin 2%, hyaluronic acidRs 4,088All, including sensitiveSimple serum; safe in most routines
Elluvi Hydra Glow Serum (30ml)Niacinamide 10%, zinc PCA 1%Rs 1,149Oily, combinationPair it with arbutin for faster results

Elluvi Hydra Glow Cream (Rs 1,449) is our pick because it pairs 2% alpha arbutin with two more evidence-backed pigment fighters, niacinamide and retinol, in a night cream that also moisturises. Start two or three nights a week because of the retinol.

If you want a simple, single-ingredient serum you can use morning or night, The Ordinary Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA (about Rs 4,088) is the best-known option. It's also the better choice if you're pregnant or can't use retinol.

How do you use alpha arbutin?

  1. Cleanse and pat dry.
  2. Apply a few drops of serum (or your arbutin cream) to the whole face, not just the spots.
  3. Follow with moisturiser.
  4. In the morning, finish with broad-spectrum SPF 50 sunblock.

You can use it once or twice a day. Give it 8 to 12 weeks before judging results.

What can you combine alpha arbutin with?

  • Niacinamide: the best partner. Try Elluvi Hydra Glow Serum (10% niacinamide, Rs 1,149) in the morning and an arbutin product at night.
  • Vitamin C: brightens and protects from sun damage. See our best vitamin C serums.
  • Azelaic acid or tranexamic acid: for stubborn pigmentation and melasma.
  • Retinol: speeds up results; introduce it slowly.

Who should be careful?

Alpha arbutin is well tolerated by most skin. Patch-test first if you're very sensitive, and stop if you get redness or itching. Avoid unlabelled "arbutin whitening" creams sold loose online, which may contain undeclared hydroquinone or steroids. Read our guide to safe brightening creams.

Frequently asked questions

Is alpha arbutin better than hydroquinone?

Hydroquinone is stronger, but it needs medical supervision and can cause side effects with long use. Alpha arbutin works more gently and slowly, and is safe for long-term use without a prescription.

Can I use alpha arbutin with niacinamide?

Yes. They work in different ways (arbutin slows pigment production, niacinamide stops it reaching the surface), so they're one of the best combinations for dark spots.

Can I use alpha arbutin with vitamin C?

Yes. Many people use vitamin C in the morning and alpha arbutin at night, or layer them together. If your skin stings, separate them.

Is alpha arbutin safe in pregnancy?

It's generally considered low-risk, but there's little research in pregnancy. Ask your doctor first. Azelaic acid is the most commonly recommended pigment treatment in pregnancy.

Alpha arbutin serum ke kya fayde hain?

Alpha arbutin fades dark spots (daag dhabbe), tanning and patchy pigmentation, and evens out skin tone (rangat). Use it daily for 8 to 12 weeks with sunblock every morning.
