Glutathione for Skin: Does It Work, and Is It Safe?

Glutathione is sold in Pakistan as a whitening miracle. Here's what the research actually shows about capsules, injections and creams, and what works better.

Glutathione is one of the most searched skin products in Pakistan, sold as capsules, drips and injections in clinics and parlours, and in creams, soaps and face washes. It's marketed as a quick route to "whiter" skin. Before spending money on it, or letting anyone inject it, here's what the evidence actually says.

What is glutathione?

Glutathione is an antioxidant your body makes naturally, mainly in the liver. It helps protect cells from damage. In skin, it can nudge pigment cells to make a lighter form of melanin, which is why it's marketed for skin lightening.

Do glutathione capsules work?

The research is thin:

  • A handful of small, short studies found a slight lightening effect in some people taking oral glutathione daily for several months.
  • Other studies found little or no difference from a placebo.
  • Any effect seems to fade after you stop.

Oral glutathione is generally well tolerated, but it's an expensive way to get a small, uncertain result. It won't change your natural skin colour.

Are glutathione injections safe?

This is where we'd urge real caution.

  • Not approved for skin lightening. Injectable glutathione is a medicine with limited medical uses. Using it for whitening is off-label, with no agreed dose or schedule.
  • Health regulators in several countries have warned against it for skin lightening, citing safety concerns and products of unknown origin.
  • Reported risks include allergic reactions, rashes, effects on the kidneys, liver and thyroid, and infections or other harm from unsterile injections given by untrained staff.
  • Many products sold in Pakistan are unregulated, so you can't be sure what's in the vial.

If you're considering it anyway, speak to a qualified doctor first, and never accept injections at a parlour or from an unlicensed seller.

Do glutathione creams and face washes work?

There's very little evidence. Glutathione is a large, fragile molecule that doesn't absorb well through skin and breaks down easily in a cream. More worryingly, some "gluta" creams sold loose online or by parlours have been found to contain undeclared steroids or mercury. Read our guide to whitening creams to avoid.

What works better for even skin tone?

If your goal is to fade a tan, dark spots or patchy pigmentation, these work better and more safely:

  1. Broad-spectrum SPF 50 sunblock every day. The single most effective step. See the best sunblocks in Pakistan.
  2. Niacinamide: evens tone and calms redness. Elluvi Hydra Glow Serum (10% niacinamide, Rs 1,149) is an affordable start.
  3. Alpha arbutin: slows pigment production. Elluvi Hydra Glow Cream (Rs 1,449) combines it with niacinamide and retinol. Read more about alpha arbutin.
  4. Vitamin C: brightens and protects. See the best vitamin C serums.
  5. Azelaic acid: good for acne marks and melasma, and suitable in pregnancy with your doctor's agreement.

Give any of these 8 to 12 weeks. For melasma, read our melasma cream guide.

The bottom line

Glutathione capsules may give a small, temporary brightening effect for some people, at a high price. Injections carry real risks that aren't worth it for a cosmetic goal. Creams have little evidence. Sunblock and proven topical ingredients will do more for an even, healthy skin tone (rangat), and you can stop them any time without side effects.

Frequently asked questions

Do glutathione capsules work for skin whitening?

The evidence is weak. A few small studies found a slight lightening effect in some people after several months, but results vary a lot and fade after stopping. They won't change your natural skin colour.

Are glutathione injections safe?

They're not approved for skin lightening, doses aren't standardised, and many products sold in Pakistan come from unregulated sources. Reported risks include allergic reactions, skin rashes, effects on the kidneys and liver, and infections from unsafe injections.

Do glutathione creams and face washes work?

There's very little evidence. Glutathione is a large molecule that doesn't absorb well through skin, and it breaks down easily. Some "glutathione" creams sold loose also contain undeclared steroids or mercury.

What works better than glutathione for even skin tone?

Daily broad-spectrum sunblock, plus topical niacinamide, alpha arbutin, azelaic acid, vitamin C or retinol. These have much stronger evidence for fading tanning and dark spots.

Kya glutathione se rangat saaf hoti hai?

Glutathione may slightly brighten skin tone (rangat) in some people, but the effect is small and temporary. Injections carry real risks. Sunblock and creams with niacinamide or alpha arbutin are safer and better proven.
