Glycerin for Skin: Benefits, How to Use It With Rose Water, and Prices in Pakistan
Glycerin and rose water is Pakistan's oldest winter skincare trick, and the science backs it up. Here's how glycerin works, the right way to mix and use it, what it costs, and the "glycerin" products that don't belong on your face.

Glycerin and rose water (glycerin aur arq-e-gulab) has been in Pakistani homes for generations, especially in winter. It's one of the rare home remedies that modern skincare science fully supports: glycerin is a key ingredient in many expensive moisturisers, and a bottle costs less than Rs 200.
Here's how glycerin works, how to use it properly, and which products to buy.
What does glycerin do for skin?
Glycerin (also spelled glycerine, or glycerol) is a humectant: it attracts water and holds it in the outer layer of the skin. Research shows it does more than that:
- Hydrates the top layer of skin, so it feels softer and less tight.
- Helps repair the skin barrier, the protective outer layer that winter air, hot water and harsh soap damage.
- Makes skin smoother, reducing flaking and that ashy look on arms and legs.
- Is gentle. Glycerin rarely irritates and doesn't clog pores, so it suits oily, acne-prone and sensitive skin too.
What glycerin doesn't do: lighten skin, fade dark spots or treat acne. It's a moisturiser, and a very good one.
Why you should dilute glycerin
Neat glycerin is thick and very sticky, and it attracts dust. It also works best when there's water for it to hold on to. On its own in very dry winter air, it can leave skin feeling tacky without hydrating much.
That's why the traditional mix works so well: rose water provides water and a pleasant smell, and glycerin holds that water in the skin. Then a moisturiser or a drop of oil on top seals it in.
The right glycerin and rose water mix
- Normal and dry skin: 1 part glycerin to 3 parts rose water (for example, 1 tablespoon glycerin to 3 tablespoons rose water).
- Oily or acne-prone skin: 1 part glycerin to 5 parts rose water.
- Very dry hands, feet and elbows: 1 part glycerin to 2 parts rose water.
Mix in a clean bottle, shake before each use, and make a fresh batch every two to three weeks. Keep it out of direct sun.
How to use it
- Wash your face or bathe with lukewarm water.
- While your skin is still damp, apply a few drops of the mix to your face, or a little more to your hands, arms and legs.
- Seal it in with your usual moisturiser, or with a few drops of oil on very dry areas.
- Use it morning and night in winter. In the morning, finish with sunblock.
It also works on dry lips (follow with petroleum jelly), cracked heels (apply at night and wear cotton socks) and rough knuckles.
Which glycerin to buy in Pakistan

Saeed Ghani Glycerin with Rose Water: easiest option (about Rs 260)
A ready-mixed bottle from one of Pakistan's best-known rose water brands, with thousands of sales on Daraz. It's already diluted, so you can use it straight from the bottle. Shake it well first.
Pure glycerin: cheapest, for mixing your own (about Rs 150–200 for 60–100ml)
Pharmacies and Daraz sell pure glycerin in small bottles. Choose one labelled for skin, cosmetic or pharmaceutical use (USP or BP grade). Vegetable glycerin works just as well as other types. A 500ml bottle (about Rs 820) lasts a family all winter.
Rose water: Saeed Ghani or Marhaba (about Rs 200–550)
Any plain rose water (arq-e-gulab) works. Saeed Ghani's spray (about Rs 198) is convenient, and Marhaba's 800ml bottle (about Rs 369) is the best value. Avoid rose waters with added alcohol or strong perfume if your skin is sensitive. Plain water or a few drops of aloe vera gel also work if you don't like the smell of roses.
Is rose water good for skin?
Rose water is gentle and pleasant, and lab studies suggest it has mild soothing and antioxidant properties. But the main benefit in this mix is simple: it's a nice-smelling way to add water. It won't tighten pores, remove tan or lighten skin. If your skin stings or itches after using it, stop; some people react to the fragrance compounds in roses.
Glycerin products that don't belong on your face
Glycerin is in many medicines, and some are very searched-for in Pakistan. These are not skincare:
- Soda glycerin ear drops: contain sodium bicarbonate, for softening ear wax.
- Glycerin suppositories: for constipation.
- Ichthammol glycerin: a medicated preparation for ear infections and boils, used on a doctor's advice.
Only use glycerin sold for skin, cosmetic or general pharmaceutical use.
Glycerin vs other moisturisers
Glycerin is a humectant, so it works best alongside something that seals moisture in. A simple, effective winter routine:
- Glycerin and rose water on damp skin.
- A moisturiser on top: see our best moisturisers for dry skin in Pakistan's winter.
- Sunblock in the morning.
For your body, a lotion with glycerin and petroleum jelly does both jobs at once; see our best body lotions in Pakistan. If you want a stronger hydrating serum for your face, hyaluronic acid is another humectant that works the same way.
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply glycerin directly on my face?
It's better to dilute it. Neat glycerin is very thick and sticky, and on its own in very dry air it works less well. Mix one part glycerin with three to five parts rose water or water, and apply a moisturiser on top.
Can I use glycerin on my face every day?
Yes. Glycerin is gentle and suits almost every skin type, including oily and acne-prone skin. Once or twice a day is fine, especially in winter.
Is glycerin good for oily skin?
Yes, in small amounts. Glycerin hydrates without adding oil and doesn't clog pores. Use a more diluted mix, such as one part glycerin to five parts rose water, and a light gel moisturiser.
Does glycerin lighten skin?
No. Glycerin makes skin smoother and more hydrated, so it can look brighter and less ashy, but it doesn't change skin colour or fade dark spots.
Can I use soda glycerin ear drops on my skin?
No. Soda glycerin ear drops contain sodium bicarbonate and are made for softening ear wax. They aren't meant for the face or body. Use glycerin sold for skin or pharmaceutical use.
Glycerin aur arq-e-gulab kaise lagayen?
Mix one spoon of glycerin with three to five spoons of rose water (arq-e-gulab) in a clean bottle. After washing your face or bathing, apply a few drops to damp skin, then put your moisturiser on top. Use it on hands, feet and lips too.
