Centella Serum: What Cica Does for Your Skin and Whether You Need It

Centella, or cica, is the calming hero of Korean skincare. Here's what it really does, who should use it, and what it costs in Pakistan.

Centella asiatica, known in skincare as cica, is one of the biggest ingredients to come out of Korean skincare, and centella serums are now widely sold in Pakistan. It has a reputation as a miracle calmer. The truth is more modest, but for the right skin it's genuinely useful.

What does centella do?

Centella contains active compounds (madecassoside, asiaticoside and centellosides) that:

  • Calm redness and irritation, including the stinging some people get from actives.
  • Support healing of broken or inflamed skin, such as healing breakouts.
  • Strengthen the skin barrier, so skin loses less water and reacts less.
  • Provide light antioxidant protection.

It's not a strong treatment for acne, dark spots or wrinkles. Think of it as a supporting ingredient that makes your routine more comfortable.

Who should use a centella serum?

Centella is most useful if your skin is:

  • Sensitive or easily red.
  • Acne-prone and inflamed, especially if acne treatments are making it sore.
  • Over-exfoliated, after too many acids, scrubs or a harsh "whitening" cream.
  • Starting retinol and dealing with dryness and redness.

If your skin is calm and your main concern is oil, dark spots or dullness, you'll get more from niacinamide or vitamin C.

SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Ampoule is the most popular centella serum sold in Pakistan, at around Rs 5,000 for 30ml or Rs 5,519 for 100ml. It's a simple, watery serum that's mostly centella extract, which makes it a good choice for very sensitive skin. SKIN1004's Hyalu-Cica version adds hyaluronic acid for dry skin, and the Poremizing version is lighter for oily skin.

On a tighter budget, Elluvi Hydra Glow Serum (Rs 1,149) is a better all-rounder for oily, acne-prone skin. Its 10% niacinamide and 1% zinc calm redness and control oil, and help fade the marks breakouts leave behind. Read more in azelaic acid vs niacinamide.

How do you use a centella serum?

  1. Cleanse.
  2. Apply a few drops to slightly damp skin.
  3. Follow with your other serums or treatments, then moisturiser.
  4. In the morning, finish with sunblock.

It's gentle enough to use morning and night, and fine to layer under retinol, vitamin C or acne treatments.

Is centella worth the money?

If your skin is irritated, red or reacting to actives, yes: a calm barrier makes every other product work better. If your skin is calm and you're on a budget, skip it and put your money into sunblock and one active ingredient for your main concern.

Frequently asked questions

What is cica in skincare?

Cica is a nickname for Centella asiatica, a plant used for centuries to help skin heal. Skincare products use its extract and its active compounds, such as madecassoside and asiaticoside.

Is centella good for acne?

It helps calm red, irritated breakouts and supports healing, but it doesn't treat the cause of acne. Use it alongside a proven acne treatment like salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide or adapalene.

Can I use centella with retinol or vitamin C?

Yes. Centella is a good partner for strong actives because it calms the irritation they can cause. Apply centella first, then your active, or use them at different times of day.

Does centella fade dark spots?

Not much on its own. For dark spots, choose niacinamide, alpha arbutin, azelaic acid or vitamin C.

Centella serum kis ke liye acha hai?

Centella serum suits sensitive, red or irritated skin, and skin that's breaking out or stinging from too many actives. It calms and repairs; for dark spots (daag dhabbe), use niacinamide or alpha arbutin instead.
