Retinol for Beginners: How to Start Without Irritation

Retinol is one of the most proven ingredients in skincare, and the easiest to get wrong. Here's how to start slowly and actually see results.

Retinoids, the vitamin A family, are among the best-studied skincare ingredients for acne, fine lines and wrinkles (jhuriyan), uneven texture and pigmentation. They also irritate easily, which is why so many people quit after a week of peeling and blame the product.

The fix isn't a stronger retinol. It's a slower start.

What does retinol actually do?

Retinol speeds up how quickly skin cells renew. Over weeks, that means:

  • Smoother texture and smaller-looking pores.
  • Fewer clogged pores and blackheads.
  • Faded dark spots, because pigmented cells are shed faster.
  • Fewer fine lines with long-term use, because retinoids help skin make more collagen.

It's slow. Most of the visible change happens between month two and month six.

Elluvi Age Defying Serum (Rs 1,299) is the easiest place to start. At 0.3% retinol, it's in the beginner range, and the 5% niacinamide alongside it helps calm redness and support the skin barrier, two things that make the first few weeks easier. The Lahore brand sells it with cash on delivery, and it costs about a third of imported retinols in Pakistan.

If your main concern is dark spots or pigmentation, Elluvi's Hydra Glow Cream (Rs 1,449) combines the same 0.3% retinol with niacinamide and 2% alpha arbutin, a brightening ingredient, in a night cream that also moisturises. Use one or the other, not both.

If your skin is dry or sensitive, The Ordinary Retinol 0.2% in Squalane is gentler still, because the oil base buffers it.

If your main concern is acne, ask a pharmacist or dermatologist about adapalene 0.1% gel. Local versions are widely available and cheap, and adapalene is better proven for acne than retinol.

How should a beginner start retinol?

  1. Weeks 1–2: two nights a week.
  2. Weeks 3–4: three nights a week if your skin is calm.
  3. Week 5 onwards: every other night, then nightly if your skin stays comfortable.

Apply a pea-sized amount for the whole face, on dry skin, about 10 minutes after washing. Avoid the corners of the nose, the mouth and the eyelids, where skin is thinnest.

Your night routine: gentle cleanser → retinol → moisturiser.

Your morning routine: gentle cleanser → moisturiser → sunscreen.

What strength of retinol should you start with?

0.2–0.3% is a sensible start. Strengths of 0.5% and 1% exist, but they aren't faster if they leave your skin too irritated to use them consistently. Move up only after three months at your current strength with no irritation.

How do you reduce retinol irritation?

  • Use the "sandwich" method: a thin layer of moisturiser, then retinol, then more moisturiser.
  • Pause exfoliating acids and scrubs for the first month. That includes glycolic and salicylic face washes on retinol nights.
  • Keep the rest of your routine simple and fragrance-free.
  • Don't apply it on damp skin. Water helps retinol penetrate faster, which means more stinging.

Some dryness and light flaking in the first few weeks is normal. Burning, swelling or raw patches are not: stop for a few days, moisturise, and restart at fewer nights a week.

Why is sunscreen essential with retinol?

Retinol makes skin more sensitive to the sun, and sun exposure undoes the pigmentation work it's doing. Wear SPF 30–50 every morning, even in winter and even indoors near windows. See our guide to the best sunscreens for oily skin.

Who should not use retinol?

Anyone who is pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding should avoid all retinoids. If you have eczema, rosacea or very reactive skin, speak to a dermatologist first.

How long does retinol take to work?

Expect smoother texture in 4–6 weeks, and visible changes in acne and pigmentation after about 3 months. Fine lines take 6 months or more. Consistency matters far more than strength.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between retinol and adapalene?

Both are retinoids. Adapalene (usually a 0.1% gel) is stronger and is the better choice for acne; dermatologists prescribe it often. Retinol is gentler and more cosmetic, and better suited to fine lines, texture and dullness.

What is retinol purging?

A temporary increase in small breakouts in areas where you normally get pimples, usually lasting 4–6 weeks as skin turnover speeds up. Breakouts in new places, or burning and swelling, are irritation, not purging.

Can I use retinol in summer?

Yes, at night only, with sunscreen every morning. Many people find it easier to start in winter, when there's less sun and sweat, which makes November to February a good time to begin in Pakistan.

Can I use retinol with niacinamide or vitamin C?

Niacinamide pairs well with retinol and can reduce irritation. Use vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night.

Retinol kab aur kaise lagayein?

Apply retinol only at night, on clean, dry skin, two nights a week to start. Use a pea-sized amount for the whole face, follow with moisturiser, and wear sunscreen every morning.
